Why did you choose a career with an international focus?
Initially, I was interested in marketing then noticed my college business department recently launched the International Degree program. I always liked trying new things, learning about countries and cultures so I changed my marketing major to International Business. I continue to take various courses to keep current with new procedures, market developments, etc.
Describe your typical day at work.
Everything is Email, texts, phone calls and paperwork. Today, everyone has a cell phone so communication is constant. The world wants quick answers. So, I would have to say that writing skills are real important. In addition, there’s market research, logistics, regulatory and overseas inquiries.
What personal qualities have helped you become successful?
First and most important, I really like and enjoy my career. In my opinion, this is an important quality in any career a person can have. To follow up, I would say culturally aware, diplomatic, patient, considerate, and respectful. Detailed and a sense of humor is always good.
What advice would you give someone seeking a career in your field?
First of all, enjoy working with people. If you’re looking for a position, reach out to people in various fields. They may know someone or a company who needs a person with an international focus.
How do you see the future of the profession? What are the positions in this field with the most potential for growth?
In my opinion, the future is good. Due to technology and the internet, the world is a smaller and faster place. It’s much easier to research and make connections. There will always be the logistics, customs, regulatory specialists, bankers, lawyers, sales people, marketing specialist etc. who all play a role in international business.
